Why choose Super-pulsed 904 over Continuous Wave?

In research in 2003 comparing penetration of different laser types, Bjordal et al observed that the skin barrier blocked 90% of the light from continuous wave HeNe (632 nm), 80% from continuous wave GaAlAs (820 nm) and NdYAG (1064 nm) whereas 50% of the light from super-pulsed GaAs (904 nm) lasers penetrated.  Click here to view the full study.

In research by Joensen et al, a super-pulsed, 904 nm diode, peak power 20Watts / average power 60 mW delivered 38% of its total light energy through the skin initially.  Furthermore, over the 150 seconds of exposure the percentage of light from the super-pulsed 904 diode penetrating the skin increased with time to 58% vs a mere, steady 28%  from a continuous wave, 810nm – 200 mW diode.  The authors concluded, “The finding that superpulsed 904 nm LLLT light energy penetrates 2-3 easier through the rat skin barrier than 810 nm continuous wave LLLT, corresponds well with results of LLLT dose analyses in systematic reviews of LLLT in musculoskeletal disorders.” Click to view the full abstract here.
